2022/2023 FACULTY SENATE

1) Call to Order

There was a call to order at 2:05 PM

Quorum established.

2)Approval of Minutes – March

Eric moved to approve March minutes and Gibran seconded. It was unanimously approved.

3) April FS meeting was canceled

4) The was no Guest for May

5) Comments

• AB268-The Retention Incentives-passed and the first check was issued 4/21/23. The second will be sent out in June. The quarterly has not passed, which will be $250 for a total of $1000 in the year.
• FS chairs with the Chancellor 4/19/23
  • NSHE budget closes on May 5, 2023.
  • Retention bonuses of $500 in April $500 in June. iii) COLA raises were 2% in April and then 10% in July and 4% after that. iv) Senate Bill 347 consolidation is now a study bill for the community colleges.  v) There was a special BOR meeting on April 21, 2023.  vi) Senate Bill 440 – Appropriations requiring certain one-time payments and salary increase for state officers is unlikely to pass.
• FS chairs with the Chancellor 5/16/23
  • COLA raises were again mentioned. 10% in July but we are only funded 65% so we may need to come up with the money. The Chancellor did say we will see the 10% – depending on the amendment that gets approved. The Chancellor spoke of ways to obtain the increase may include furlough days, student fee increases and hiring freezes.
  • June BOR at UNR are not scheduled to run long.

• [JL] How much in-person are the Faculty Senate meetings? [EB] Pretty much everyone makes it. Thursdays are earmarked for committee meetings and Fridays are marked for BOR meetings and committees.

2023. June 26, 2023, they are calling the Chancellor Search week. They currently have 70 applicants and are looking to dwindle down the list. The Chancellor has announced his retirement for August 4, 2023. If no one has been found they will place an Officer in Charge.
2024. Remote work – NHSE has a more balanced approach – we have an agreement for remote work. Ed will pass on the form for those who want it.

6) New business 

1. Elections are open for new members – there are four (4) SCS positions and two (2) SA positions. Five (5) of the seated members self-nominated apart from one member-marked tentative. There was an email sent out to notify everyone of open nominations. After nominations an election will be held in ballot form, and we should know the results by June.
   1. [GH] There was a question whether our senate structure was too big/too small. Glenn sent Ed the information for the next election process.
   2. [JL] Keep in mind the time frame – to allow people to nominate by say May 26, so we can get the election completed by June, along with the Chair Elects.

• [MC] Who can make the nominations? [GH] Anyone can nominate but when the person is nominated, they have to accept the nomination and then Ed is notified.

2023. Cheryl Olsen has submitted her resignation as a member of Faculty Senate, effective May 19, 2023.
